Ivory Coast, targeting tourism

Recently, the Minister of Tourism of the Republic of Ivory Coast, Siandou Fofana, has detailed his strategy whose objective is to make the Ivory Coast the fifth destination in Africa by 2025 in terms of tourism.

The recent COVID19 crisis did not go unnoticed in terms of tourism results obtained in 2020, in which it went from 2.3 million to 600,000 visitors. However, says Minister Fofana, this crisis has not been viewed as a threat, but rather as an opportunity to investigate and plan new development scenarios in the country.

From this global conjuncture came the idea of ”Sublime Ivory Coast”, an ambitious national tourism development plan. Its main objective is to position the Ivory Coast among the top 5 countries with the greatest tourism potential in Africa. In addition to its main objective, it is also expected to make the country one of the most popular for business tourism, with 5 million international visitors surpassed by 2025.

There are other objectives, such as creating new jobs derived from tourism or making tourism a generator of growth points for the country.

The “Sublime Ivory Coast” program is receiving support from ECOWAS and UMEOA. Parallel projects supported by community directives are being carried out, such as the launch of a common program to promote tourism activity in the subregion together with intra-community trips, or projects to promote cruise tourism for the coastal countries of the subregion.

Notably, Côte d’Ivoire was appointed as a member of the Executive Council and host of World Tourism Day 2021. At the 23rd General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization, to be held in Saint Petersburg on September 27, Côte d’Ivoire has planned to organize a tourist proposal to publicize all the tourist potential of the region.

We will have to wait a while to see if the program and all the country’s efforts to consolidate a more competitive and stronger tourism sector bear fruit. For the moment, the strategic path has been clearly defined and it is beginning to advance in search of excellent results.
